Le Corbusier LC4 chaise-longue - the symbol of modern design

The famous Swiss-French architect and designer Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, widely known as Le Corbusier, was one of the pioneers for what we call modern architecture nowadays. He was active from the early to mid-20th century. He is renowned for his outstanding contributions to modern architecture and his furniture creations, that have become iconic pieces in design history.

The LC4 (also known as ”Le Corbusier chaise-longue”) is one of the emblematic pieces of furniture designed in collaboration with Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret in 1928. The lounge chair reflects the principles of his architecture, emphasising clean lines, geometric shapes, the use of modern materials such as tubular steel and illustrates the focus on functionality, simplicity and industrial production techniques.

The LC4 is an elegantly designed minimalist recliner composed of a cylindrical chrome steel frame, a sliding headrest and an arched seat upholstered in leather or fabric. It is designed to provide ergonomic support and relaxation thanks to its adjustable reclining feature. It can be reclined at different angles, between upright and horizontal. Le Corbusier and his collaborators designed LC4 as a result of their study exploring the relationship between furniture and the human body. It is considered a classic piece of furniture and it is still under production today.

It has become a symbol of modern style and has been widely celebrated for its elegant aesthetics and ergonomic qualities. The LC4 chaise-longue stays a highly demanded piece for its everlasting look and functionality. Its iconic status has turned it into the preferred choice for both residential and commercial settings and it has been integrated into various famous projects and spaces over the decades.
