Barcelona chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Inspired by simplicity, this modern, minimal style has radically changed traditions in the field of interior design. Influenced not least by Japanese simplicity, minimalist furniture proposes a simple, clean, airy space and excludes any accumulation of objects, excluding agglomeration that often gives a feeling of suffocation, of pressure. The most brilliant examples of the genre combine inspired design and quality parts, producing a simple but effective result.

Over time, the needs, traditions and specifics of a life as simple as possible have proven to be important sources of inspiration for numerous generations of designers. The shape and functionality of an object, whether it is a piece of furniture or an accessory, are the main criteria that define its appearance.

One of the most famous applications is the Barcelona chair, produced in 1929 and still very popular, even if modern materials are now used, keeping the simplicity and naturalness of the design. This chair reflects the architect van der Rohe's motto "Less is more" (More means less)

History of the Barcelona chair

The Barcelona Pavilion was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, for the international exhibition in Barcelona in 1929, as the German national pavilion. Built of glass, travertine and different types of marble, the pavilion was created to host official receptions presided over by King Alphonso XIII of Spain together with the German authorities. br

Mies van der Rohe designed a chair, especially for the pavilion, on a metal profile, made of leather. They were designed as thrones for the king and queen of Spain, when they were meeting with the German ambassador.

Over time it became the image of modern design, to such an extent that it is still manufactured and sold today.
